Overview

Kimley-Horn is seeking a motivated and experienced Fire Protection Engineer to join our growing Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Fire Protection (MEP/FP) practice in Orlando, Florida (FL) office! This is not a remote position. This individual will serve as a technical leader responsible for the planning, design, and coordination of fire protection and life safety systems for a diverse portfolio of healthcare, federal, aviation, commercial, industrial, higher education, and municipal projects.

 


The ideal candidate is a Qualified Fire Protection Engineer (QFPE) with strong technical expertise, excellent communication skills, and a passion for delivering high-quality design solutions in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the planning, analysis, and design of fire protection and life safety systems for new construction, renovation, and expansion projects.
  • Perform building and life safety code analyses, occupancy classifications, egress evaluations, fire-resistance-rated construction review, and development of life safety strategies.
  • Develop fire protection design criteria and construction documents for:
    • Automatic sprinkler systems
    • Standpipe systems
    • Fire pumps and water supply systems
    • Fire alarm and mass notification systems
    • Special hazard suppression systems
  • Perform water supply analyses, fire flow evaluations, and fire protection infrastructure assessments.
  • Coordinate fire protection requirements with architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and civil disciplines.
  • Participate in quality control reviews, design development, permitting, and construction administration activities.
  • Interface directly with clients, authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs), contractors, and project stakeholders.
  • Provide technical mentorship to designers and junior engineers.
  • Support business development efforts and contribute to proposal development and project pursuits.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical/Fire Protection Engineering.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) with Fire Protection Engineering licensure.
  • Minimum 8+ years of experience in fire protection engineering and life safety consulting.
  • Demonstrated experience designing fire alarm, sprinkler, suppression, and life safety systems.
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • NFPA Codes and Standards
    • International Building Code (IBC)
    • International Fire Code (IFC)
    • Life Safety Code (NFPA 101)
    • Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC) and federal design requirements
  • Experience preparing construction documents, specifications, calculations, and code analyses.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Healthcare facility design experience.
  • ACHA/AHCA healthcare project experience strongly preferred.
  • Federal and Department of Defense project experience.
  • Experience with mission critical, aviation, industrial, laboratory, or higher education facilities.
  • Revit and BIM coordination experience.
  • Familiarity with phased occupancy projects and complex renovation efforts.
