Overview

Kimley-Horn has an opportunity for a motivated Substation Physical Design Engineer experience to expand our Power Delivery practice in Denver, CO!

Responsibilities

From a technical standpoint, this person will be responsible for planning and designing the physical infrastructure of electrical substations. This includes creating detailed layouts for major equipment such as transformers, breakers, switches, and buswork, ensuring all placements meet safety clearances and utility standards.  They will design the grounding grid to protect against electrical faults, plan conduits and cable routing systems, and coordinate foundations and steel structures with civil and structural engineering teams.

 

They will generate a full set of construction drawings contractors rely on, general arrangements, plan and elevation views, foundation plans, grounding layouts, trench and conduit plans, and bills of materials. They will ensure the design complies with IEEE, NEC, NESC, and utility-specific requirements, and often provide field support during construction to address issues and verify proper installation.

 

Additionally will be responsible for the following to help grow their practice by doing the following:

 

  • Lead the design and analysis of complex electrical systems for renewable generation, energy storage, and utility-scale substation projects
  • Responsible for the review and development of design documents and reports, including electrical layouts, equipment schematics and block diagrams, electrical system calculations, and one-line diagrams
  • Daily interaction and collaboration on multi-disciplinary teams, with interaction across Kimley-Horn offices
  • Prepare project specifications, electrical construction cost estimates, and proposals, supporting the growth of electrical engineering service areas in the local market and across the country
  • Leadership responsibilities include:

    • Growing and leading a Power Delivery practice
  • Our Project Managers/Practice Builders manage their projects profitably, transition work to qualified staff, grow and mentor staff, and act as a positive leader and mentor
  • The successful candidate will be given a great deal of autonomy to lead, direct, and grow their business

Qualifications

  • 12+ years of relevant experience managing Electrical projects
  • Registered Professional Engineer (P.E.) license
  • Bachelor's Degree required, preference in Electrical Engineering
  • Strong understanding and experience in phsyical design 
  • Firm understanding of the National Electrical Code, National Electrical Safety Code, IEEE and ANSI Standards
  • Ability to effectively communicate positively at all levels of the organization

  • Ability to manage and mentor staff, and direct resources effectively in a positive manner

  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects profitably

Salary Detail:

  • $140k-$190k
  • Eligible for Performance Based Bonus Compensation
