Overview

Kimley-Horn has an opportunity for a motivated Transit Planner to join our team in the San Diego, California, (CA) office contributing to various, large transportation and transit infrastructure projects. 

 

We are seeking a mid- to senior-level Transportation/Transit Planner with a strategic mindset and demonstrated experience leading large-scale, complex planning efforts. This individual will play a key role in advancing transit and multimodal transportation projects, collaborating with clients and communities, and contributing to the growth of our transit practice.

Responsibilities

  • Be a leader in the planning, management, and delivery of transit projects, with a focus on Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), Light Rail Transit (LRT), Commuter Rail, and On-Demand services.

  • Manage and contribute to a range of transportation planning efforts, including corridor studies, transit development plans, circulation plans, active transportation plans, and safety studies.

  • Guide short- and long-range planning efforts, technical analyses, and multimodal evaluations.

  • Collaborate with municipalities, regional partners, transit agencies, and community members to build consensus and advance project goals.

  • Support clients with program management, capital planning, funding strategies, and policy development.

  • Oversee stakeholder and public engagement activities, ensuring clear communication and meaningful input.

  • Provide regular updates and recommendations to clients and agency partners while maintaining strong relationships.

  • Mentor junior staff and foster collaboration within multidisciplinary teams.

  • Balance multiple priorities across concurrent projects while maintaining high-quality outcomes.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, City or Urban Planning, or a related field.
  • American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) license or Professional Engineering (PE), or ability to obtain within one year preferred

  • Minimum of 8+ years of transit-focused experience, which may include several of the following areas:
    o Corridor planning
    o General Plans, Specific Plans, or Precise Plans
    o Short-Range Transit Plans
    o Active transportation plans
    o Multi-modal concept design
    o Transit operations and performance analysis
    o Traffic and bicycle/pedestrian analysis

  • Experience communicating and working with clients
  • Experience managing projects and tasks
  • Experience interacting with the public as part of project outreach activities
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills
  • Strong organizational skills and detail-orientation
  • Ability to balance priorities among multiple projects
  • Self-motivated team player

Salary Range:

  • $125,000 - $170,000
  • Eligible for Performance Based Bonus Compensation
