Overview

Kimley-Horn is seeking an experience Substation Electrical Engineer to join our growing Power Delivery team in Portland, Oregon (OR). This is a unique leadership opportunity for a high voltage substation engineer with a strong background in physical layout design and power systems studies to shape the future of utility infrastructure across the western U.S.

 

The ideal candidate will bring 12+ years of proven experience in high voltage substation engineering, with a focus on physical layout, equipment selection, and system studies. This role offers the opportunity to lead multi-disciplinary teams, mentor junior staff, and work directly with clients to deliver technically sound and efficient solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a technical expert on high voltage substation projects (69kV to 500kV+)
  • Lead and oversee physical substation design, including:
    • general arrangement, grounding, conduit plan and details, control building layouts
    • fence design, shielding & lighting design, electrical elevations, major & minor build out materials
    • equipment spcifications, calbe/conduit schedules
  • Conduct or review power system studies (e.g., load flow, short circuit, grounding, arch flash, bus sizing, condiuit fill, insulation coordination, lightening protection, AC&DC sizing, cable heating, and ampacity/voltage drop)
  • Coordinate with protection, civil, structural, and transmission engineers to ensure project integration
  • Provide leadership in client meetings, proposals, and project development
  • Mentor and develop engineering staff across multiple offices
  • Collaborate with business development teams to grow client relationships and expand our substation portfolio

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (PE license required)
  • Minimum 12 years of experience in substation design and engineering 
  • Deep understanding of the National Electrical Code, National Electrical Safety Code, IEEE, and ANSI Standards
  • Experience working with utilities, power delivery companies, consulting engineering firms, renewable developers, or electrical contractors
  • Strong leadership and communication skills
  • Willingness to travel as needed to client sites or project locations
  • Proficiency in ETAP, CDEGS, CYMCAP, Visual Lighting, PSCAD
